Ngezi Platinum Stars FC sneaked through to the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup after beating visiting Pamplemousse of Mauritius by goal to nil at the National Sports Stadium yesterday.
“Madamburo” as Ngezi is affectionately known drew one all with Pamplemousses in Maseru last weekend and are through on a 2-1 goal aggregate
Ngezi booked their place in the first round after an all important goal in the 18th minute through striker Terrence Dzvukanja who took his time to curl in a shot inside the box.
Coach Tonderai Ndiraya was happy with the result but said his side’s match fitness is still low and need to get up to speed to reach the required standards of continental football.
Madamburo created several scoring chances which they could not convert while the visitors also missed some glorious chances.
Ndiraya’s opposite number Tony Francois said he lost to a better team that was both technically and tactically superior.
Next up for Ngezi is a trip to Angola for the CAF Confederation Cup first round proper against C.R.D Libolo in three weeks time.
Ndiraya said he is aiming to go as far as possible in their maiden season and possibly reach the group stages.
The decision by CAF to make them play at the National Sports Stadium in the capital instead of their home ground, the Baobab Stadium at Ngezi Platinum Mine saw scores of their supporters in a corner of the stadium was definitely a factor in yesterday’s match.
The Ngezi Platinum bankrolled side are making their debut on the African Safari after winning the Chibuku Super Cup last season.
