The diplomats, drawn from both developing and developed countries, turned up in their numbers to commemorate the special day on the Zimbabwean calendar.

Cuban Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Cde Enrique Antonio Prieto said his country as an ally of Zimbabwe, will continue to support Zimbabwe’s efforts for total freedom.

"It is a very important day and we join the Zimbabwean people in these commemorations," said Ambassador Prieto.

Both Zimbabwe and Cuba are under Western sanctions for asserting their national sovereignty.

Angolan Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Cde Pedro Hendtrick Vaal Neto said with the attainment of political independence in Zimbabwe and the region, it is now time to fight for economic emancipation.

Namibian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Dr Kaino Shingenge stressed that Zimbabwe, like Namibia, should not forget to teach the younger generation about the history of the country and the founding fathers and heroes such as those buried at the National Heroes Acre and remote places in and outside Zimbabwe.

"The tranquility in Zimbabwe did not come on its own. It was the sacrifices of these heroes, so we have to honour them. It is also our duty to teach the young generation this legacy so that they preserve it," Dr Shingenge said.

British Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Ms Deborah Bronnert and her Indonesian counterpart, Mr Eddy Poerwana were also among diplomats who attended the commemorations at the national shrine and wished the country well.

Zimbabwe is a member of several regional and international groupings such as SADC, the African Union, the NAM, and the United Nations.
