An extra-ordinary meeting of the Zanu PF Politburo ended early Saturday after an initial review of the draft constitution in the capital.
During the meeting members of the Politburo went through the contents of the draft for 12 and a half hours at the Zanu-PF Headquarters in Harare.
Zanu PF Co-Chairman, Cde Paul Mangwana and COPAC Member of the Management Committee, Cde Patrick Chinamasa explained some of the provisions of the draft to the members. Zanu PF Secretary for Information and Publicity, Cde Rugare Gumbo said the Politburo has finished its initial review of the draft constitution and has made recommendations and amendments which should be taken on board by the party’s technical team.
"We have made our observations, there was robust debate, very amicably, very frankly. People were concerned about what sort of document we are to produce and we think we are doing a good job. We looked at all aspects of the draft constitution," said Cde Gumbo.
He said the Politburo will meet again next week to examine the cleaned draft and come up with the party’s position.
Cde Gumbo said the meeting was held in a happy atmosphere with members contributing to debate on the various positions in the draft, but declined to disclose the issues of concern, referring everything to Cde Chinamasa. After finalising the draft, the parties will put the document to a referendum for rejection or acceptance as the new constitution of the country.
