The government has reaffirmed its commitment to the successful implementation of the National Matabeleland Zambezi water project, NMZWP.
Speaking during the unveiling of councillors put together to oversee the project, the Minister of Water Resources, Development and Management, Mr Samuel Sipepa-Nkomo said the government has secured funding to the tune of 864 million dollars from the China Exim-bank to support the project.
He said one of the contractors, China International Water and Electric, has since been instructed to move on site to prepare for phase one of the project which is the construction of the Gwayi-Shangani Dam.
The second phase will see the construction of a pipeline from the Gwayi-Shangani Dam to a reservoir in Bulawayo’s Cowdry Park
suburb.
The third phase entails the construction of a 245-kilometre pipeline from Zambezi River to the Gwayi-Shangani Dam.
Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister Ignatius Chombo urged the advisory council to work towards the implementation of the project.
