The 19th ordinary session of the AU Heads of State and Govt summit opened Sunday morning in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

The Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, President Robert Mugabe, is among the leaders who are attending the summit.

The summit observed a minute of silence for the departed president of Malawi, Professor Bingu wa Mutharika.

Professor Mutharika suffered a heart attack in April this year. He was 70.
