Higher and Tertiary Education Permanent Secretary, Dr Washington Mbizvo, says the ministry has received with great shock and sadness the death of a Zimbabwean student, Ethelbert Chingonzo under mysterious circumstances in Algeria last month.
In an interview with ZBC News, Dr Mbizvo said the ministry has since sent a delegation to the Chingonzo family in Rusape to break the sad news and to convey their condolences over Ethelbert’s death.
Dr Mbizvo told ZBC News that Ethelbert who was found dead the following day after going to a beach outing was a brilliant student who was doing his final year in Metallurgy at an Algiers institution of higher learning.
“Ethelbert’s death is a sad loss to the country which is facing an acute shortage of metallurgists and other specialised professionals,” said Dr Mbizvo.
He said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials based in Tripoli are making arrangements for the repatriation of Ethelbert’s body which is expected in the country next week.
Dr Mbizvo said that government plans are at an advanced stage to appoint educational attachés for its diplomatic missions in countries where Zimbabwean students are based to ensure that their welfare is catered for.
Etherlbert died on the 20th of June in Algiers after a beach outing with his friends.
