Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, President Robert Mugabe says African leaders should be wary of the threat of neo-colonialism which is real as demonstrated by the events in the Arab North and other troubled spots in the country.
In his address at the meeting of Secretaries General of former liberation movements of Southern Africa, President Mugabe, who is also the First Secretary of Zanu PF, said the threat of neo-colonialism is evident in sponsoring some political parties in the region with an effort to advance the imperialists agenda.
Cde Mugabe noted that former revolutionary parties should come up with comprehensive strategies to deal with the renewed efforts to recolonise Africa.
He said: “The purpose of this meeting is to deliberate, agree and develop joint strategies to enable us to retain the power we won on behalf of our people.
“This is urgent, given that our revolutionary ideologies have come under sustained, renewed attacks from our erstwhile colonisers who are determined to replace our revolutionary parties with malleable neo-liberal stooge parties deliberately formed, and funded to reverse the gains of our liberation struggle.”
President Mugabe told the delegates to the meeting that there is need to implement the resolutions agreed to in previous meetings for tangible results to be derived from the engagements.
The Harare meeting is a follow up to similar summits hosted by SWAPO of Namibia in Windhoek last year and others which took place in Maputo, Tanzania and Angola.
The meeting is being attended by delegates from the MPLA of Angola, FRELIMO of Mozambique, SWAPO of Namibia, CHAMACHAMA-PINDUZI of Tanzania and Zanu PF of Zimbabwe.
