Read full birthday interview here Then it was time for a special message for the visionary leader which was read by Chief Secretary in the President’s Office, Dr Misheck Sibanda. “On behalf of your staff we thought it would be nice to start the day by extending our congratulations. As we celebrate this day, we want to emphasize that it is not the years but rather it is the visionary leadership that has left a mark here and beyond,” Dr Sibanda said. A birthday is time for reflection. To look back into the past, identify weaknesses and strengths and then map the way forward. Such were the assuring words from President Mugabe. “The combination of past and present makes us delve into the future. We must remember that there are those before us who dedicated their lives to fight colonial oppression.” “People of this continent had one common principle to fight to redeem the country and the continent, even when they were not sure of their destination, they remained adamant that one day, the people would triumph over the enemy,” President Mugabe said. Cde Mugabe was presented with an office ornament, 25 tonnes of mealie-meal which he will donate to a charity of his choice and US$5 000. Also present at the ceremony were some cabinet ministers in the Office of the President. It was indeed a special day and full of special gifts. As soon as Cde Mugabe entered cabinet room, Vice President Cde Joice Mujuru was on standby to lead birthday wishes through song. Another day, another feather added to the great statesman. As the nation celebrates the life of President Mugabe, it is also true that wisdom comes through grey hair. And Zimbabwe can look to the future with great hope.
