The European Union has lifted visa bans and asset freezes of 51 Zimbabweans and 20 organisations that were on its previous list.

Zimbabwe was slapped with sanctions in 2002 following the internationalisation of its dispute with Britain.
In a statement, the EU’s head of delegation in Zimbabwe, Mr. Aldo Dell' Ariccia said the delisting of the entities and individuals is in recognition of progress made and to encourage further reforms under the Global Political Agreement.
Ambassador Dell' Ariccia said the lifting of the visa bans and asset freezes comprises one third of the individuals and two thirds of the entities previously listed, adding it was a significant amendment to EU sanctions on Zimbabwe since they were introduced in 2002.
Two members of the re-engagement team, Cdes Simbarashe Mumbengegwi and Patrick Chinamasa have also been removed and the reason given was to allow them to travel to Brussels for re-engagement discussions.
The list of those delisted includes those who have died and some members of the Politburo and other Zanu PF members.
Some of them are Cde Alice Chimbudzi, Cde Chen Chimutengwende, Cde Willard Chiwewe, Cde Rugare Gumbo, Dr Tafataona Mahoso, ZEC Deputy Chair Mrs. Joyce Laetitia Kazembe, Cde Leo Mugabe, Cde Eunice Sandi Moyo and Tsitsi Muzenda.
All the journalists that had been listed have been scrapped from the list.
However, some 112 people still remain sanctioned.
The EU council also extended its sanctions on development assistance for six months with a view to begin what Ambassador Dell' Ariccia referred to as enhanced cooperation as and when the measures can be lifted.
Although he admitted that the situation in the country has improved, he said further political reforms are necessary and impressed upon the need to accelerate the re-engagement process between Zimbabwe and the EU.
Questioned on the slow pace of the constitution making process, he said the EU is not worried by such as long as the process is on track.
However, some political and social commentators have dismissed the move by the EU as a non-event, arguing the sanctions were not necessary and are illegal in the first place.
