Goal-line technology has been given the go-ahead by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) following a vote in Zurich this evening.
Two systems - Hawk-Eye and Goal Ref have been approved after passing a series of scientific tests.
They will first be used at this December's Club World Cup in Japan and if successful, the system will be applied at the 2013 Confederations Cup and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The English Premiership has hinted it might implement the technology in January next year.
Calls for the introduction of goal-line technology grew louder after England felt they had been robbed when Frank Lampard’s goal against Germany at the 2010 World Cup was disallowed though replays showed the ball had crossed the line.
During the recent Euro 2012 tournament, co-hosts Ukraine were left complaining after England defender John Terry cleared a ball which had crossed the line.
Ukraine went on to lose the match and failed to progress.
