The British waste no opportunity to remind us that they care for the poor people of Zimbabwe. They claim that it is because they are so concerned about human rights and democracy that they have felt compelled to impose sanctions. These are noble-sounding statements of self-praise that paint British motives in a very kind light. However, we must examine words against actions if we are to discover the real motives of the British in Zimbabwe.

By Amai Jukwa Following the historic land reform programme in which President Robert Mugabe’s government forcibly reclaimed land that had been possessed through violent British conquest, Zimbabwe has given birth to an indestructible seed – the idea that Africans can own their resources and enjoy greater control of their own economies.

The 29th edition of the African Cup of Nations is over and it is neither a secret nor a speculation about which team won the cup. The Nigerian team transformed itself from being ‘Super Chickens’ on their return to the tournament to cement its status as the Super Eagles after beating Burkina Faso one-nil in the AFCON final match played at the gigantic National Stadium, South Africa last Sunday.

African football has once again proved that there is neither a powerhouse nor a small team; everything is determined by the ninety minutes of football. African teams have also shown that they will accept that the game is over when the referee whistles its end and football is not only about passing but knowing how to take penalties too. The unity shown by all quarter finalists’ coaches on their post match interviews really proved that AFCON is not about competition only but about promoting unity on the continent. We all hope that the wars in Mali, Sudan region, DR Congo among other conflicts will all come to an end sooner than we expected and Africa can stand proud of being a peaceful and united continent.
