The 2012 National Population Census kicked off at midnight with a count of people travelling out of the country and homeless people classified as vagrants.
95 census enumerators who were specifically trained at the Girls High and Mt Pleasant Schools in Harare to count vagrants were deployed to various areas in the capital, including some residential areas and the satellite towns of Chitungwiza and Epworth just before midnight.
The enumerators were divided into groups of five with one supervisor and were accompanied by police officers.
Leskanich Masinda and several supervisors who were co-ordinating the enumerators for the homeless people expressed satisfaction with the progress made by the team.
However, by this morning, the rest of the enumerators were still waiting at various centres to get the enumeration equipment like information forms and identification regalia, raising fears that the exercise ,which was marred by delays might be compromised further.
