Empowerment groups say Heroes Day celebrations should serve as a reminder to all progressive Zimbabweans on the role played by the liberation war heroes in ensuring that the black majority are empowered economically.
Zimbabwe Entrepreneurial Youth Action Group President, Mr Munyaradzi Kashambe says the Heroes Day commemorations should afford people an opportunity to pay tribute to the heroes as the economic independence that is being enjoyed by most Zimbabweans were a result of a protracted war of liberation wagged by sons and daughters of the soil.
“We are saying it is a special day for us as empowerment activists because if it was not for those who took up arms, our participation in the economy would be minimal,” said Mr Kashambe.
Zimbabwe Home Industries and Markets Association President, Mr Onesimo Gore said the fact that most black people are now participating fully in the mainstream economy is a reason to honour the country’s heroes.
“As an organisation and all our members we believe that the day is special in that we remember the supreme sacrifices made by sons and daughters of the soil and as such we should celebrate and pay tribute to them,” Mr Gore said.
Others from empowerment groups noted that young people should respect the country’s heroes and heroines who brought the freedom being enjoyed in the country.
This year’s Heroes Day commemorations will be on Monday the 13th of this month.
The main commemorations will be at the National Heroes Acre in Harare with other people gathering at provincial shrines across the country.
Meanwhile, opposition political parties have urged Zimbabweans to unite in remembering those who sacrificed their lives for the freedom prevailing in the country today.
Zimbabwe Development Party President, Mr Kissnot Muchadeyi Mukwazhi says commemorating Heroes Day should be observed by all Zimbabweans regardless of political affiliation.
Zanu (Ndonga) President, Mr Gondai Vhutuza says Heroes Day is an important event which cuts across political differences and called on all Zimbabweans to come together to commemorate the day.
Zimbabwe will commemorate Heroes Day on the 13th of this month.
Defence Forces Day will be commemorated on Tuesday, the 14th.
The commemorations have become an important milestone in the political history of the nation.
