About 7000 National Railways of Zimbabwe employees are yet to receive their salaries back-dated to February this year with the parastatal saying it is struggling to raise money as it is operating below capacity.
NRZ Public Relations Manager, Mr Fanuel Masikati revealed that the parastatal is operating below capacity and is raking in about $7 million a month falling short of satisfying its wage bill which stands at $10,5 million.
He said: “We are faced with a backlog and due to the way we are operating; we are struggling to pay our workers.”
Turning to the issue of the old locomotives that the NRZ currently has, Masikati said a $2,9 million deposit has been paid to a Chinese company for the procurement of 14 new locomotives which cost $29 million.
He mentioned that currently NRZ is in the process of refurbishing the fleet.
In 2009, the NRZ had about 9000 workers but has since retrenched around 2000.
