paulm copac.jpgThe constitution select committee says Non-Governmental Organisations that are against the constitution making process have no business monitoring any activities relating to the programme, as they have a completely different agenda.

Addressing the media on the latest developments with regards to the consultative stage of the constitution making process, COPAC chairpersons said while they are willing to work with progressive NGOs, those civic organisations who have an agenda to disrupt the process are not welcome.

COPAC co-chairperson, Mr. Douglas Mwonzora, did not mince his words in condemning actions by civic organisations such as the National Constitutional Assembly, led by Lovemore Madhuku, which he said is trying to sabotage the whole process.

“There are some observers from the non governmental organisations who were arrested in Manicaland because they were not accredited to do so.

Cde Munyaradzi Paul Mangwana said political parties are free to canvass positions they want to be articulated in the new constitution.

“We have certain party positions that we want to be included in the new constitution.

“Any party or organisation has the right to canvass for those positions there is nothing wrong with that,” Cde Mangwana said.

Other issues discussed at the media briefing included the low attendance registered at outreach meetings in Matabeleland North province, while in some areas many people attended the consultations.

i think its important that we understand that monitoring per se is not wrong because when one is monitoring it doesnt entail interference so predicated on their mandate the NGOs have a right to monitor the exercise. If Copac is doing things above board then they have nothing to worry about do they? lets not major the minor here lets deal with the real meal here which is to ensure the successful completion of the outreach and not worry about such trivial issues.smilies/wink.gif
