The Ministry of Health and Child Welfare and the City of Harare Health Department have embarked on a drive to re-activate command centres used during the 2008-2009 cholera outbreak to cater for people affected by typhoid.
Deputy Minister of Health and Child Welfare, Dr Douglas Mombeshora said the decision to re-activate some command centres that were utilised during 2008 to 2009 cholera epidemic was arrived at after the realisation that more cases of typhoid are likely to emerge since the bacteria takes between 14 to 21 days to incubate.
Dr Mombeshora said while investigations and laboratory tests conducted by the City Health Department have pointed to fish and other cooked foods as the source of the typhoid bacteria, people should continue to use aqua tablets and to boil water to avert further spread of the disease.
Typhoid was first reported in Dzivarasekwa late last year before it spreads to Warren Park and Kuwadzana.
What has been worrisome is that the moment the disease starts to go down in a certain suburb, new cases emerge in other locations.
Last week, new cases of typhoid were reported in Hatcliffe at a time it was hoped that the outbreak was being contained.
Currently people suffering from typhoid from the affected suburbs in the capital are being referred to Beatrice Road Infectious Diseases Hospital.
There are fears that the institution may fail to cope if the number of new cases continues to rise.
