 National Blood Services Zimbabwe has embarked on a programme to encourage the adult population to donate blood as part of measures to boost the blood bank which is normally depleted after the festive season.
Journalists from various media houses in the capital thronged the National Blood Services Zimbabwe headquarters in the capital to donate blood, a programme held in memory of the late ZBC Manager for Current Affairs and Research, Freedom Moyo, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a road traffic accident.
NBSZ Public Relations executive, Ms Esther Masunda, says the initiative is a reminder to all the adult population in Zimbabwe on the importance of donating blood as many precious lives are lost due to the shortage of blood.
Journalists from various media houses who donated blood said they are setting an example for other older Zimbabweans to follow as currently the youths make up 70 percent of the blood donors.
The journalists also said the gesture is a way of remembering Moyo who could have survived if blood was readily available when he needed it.
The national blood bank usually stocks between 1 500 to 2 000 units, representing approximately seven days’ supply.
The campaign is jointly run by the National Blood Services Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Union of Journalists and the Media institute of Southern Africa.
