Zim urged to avoid veld fires |

 Zimbabweans have been urged to exercise prescribed burning in an appropriate manner to avert loss of lives and valuable properties due to veldt fires.
This was said by Harare Provincial Administrator Alfred Tome at the launch of a fire awareness campaign in the capital.
The 2012 Harare Provincial Fire Awareness campaign has been launched at Budiriro High School amid concerns that open spaces are being destroyed by veldt fires.
Tome said all Zimbabweans should take heed of the legislation and the Environmental Management Act as current trends have shown that the country is losing lives and properties at an alarming rate due to veld fires.
He said government remains committed to sound responsible environmental management.
Child Member of Parliament for Glen View, Norman Jena said Zimbabweans can no longer afford to be spectators while veldt fires continue to destroy bio-diversity, lives and valuables.
“Inadequate environment protection measures are resulting from negligence and care free attitude by the public,” said Jena.
The number of veldt fire incidences has declined by 38% in the first six months of 2012 compared to 2011.
Fires continue to be responsible for destroying grazing land thereby undermining the country’s ongoing government restocking programme.
