cyclone giovanna.jpgThe Metrological Services Department says it will continue monitoring Tropical Cyclone Giovanna, which has crossed Madagascar and is now in the Mozambican channel.

Cyclone Giovanna, which is travelling at a speed of approximately 31km/hr, is heading west and is now in the Mozambican channel.

The powerful cyclone has caused extensive infrastructural damage and loss of life in Madagascar.

In an interview, Head Public Weather Services, Mr Tich Zinyemba said although projections are that the cyclone is still a long way off to be of imminent danger to Zimbabwe, it should however be borne in mind that tropical cyclones by their very nature are unpredictable in their movements.

Mr Zinyemba said the floods that wrecked havoc in Mozambique and South Africa recently are a clear warning for the country not to be complacent, adding that the cyclone will be monitored constantly with advice being given to relevant authorities for action if necessary.

Meanwhile, the Metrological Services Department says the rains currently being experienced in the country will continue for the next two months.
