paintingt.jpgZimbabwe’s contemporary art has been presented with a golden opportunity to exhibit at the 54th edition of the biggest cotemporary art event, the Venice Biennale, in Italy.

Zimbabwe is set to be the first Sub-Saharan African country to be invited to the biggest contemporary art exhibition, the Venice Biennale, as art enthusiasts have shifted their attention to art from the developing world.

The exhibition has been described by National Gallery of Zimbabwe curator, Raphael Chikukwa, as the greatest opportunity for the world to view the transformations in art and change the perception of African and Zimbabwean art.

“This is like an art Olympic…we believe it will change perception and show the true art landscape of Zimbabwe….the transformations of the past fifty years …” said  Chikukwa.

The Venice Biennale which is hosted every two years started in 1896 and enters its 115th year with its 54th edition.

The Biennale which runs from the 4th of June to 30 November is where artists, curators, museum professionals, dealers and other stakeholders in art the world over converge.

The Zimbabwe pavilion will be supported by the Museam of Monacho, The British Council, National Gallery of Zimbabwe and the Ministry of Education, Art, Sports and Culture.
