border.jpgThe Zimbabwe Revenue Authority’s 100% body search at the country’s ports of entry has been condemned by stakeholders who say it is a step backwards in terms of the country’s economic recovery.

Zimbabweans who spoke to ZBC News, expressed disappointment with ZIMRA’s 100% body search at the country’s borders, saying the initiative exposes the authority’s failure to facilitate efficient services for the benefit of the importing industry and households.

Zimbabwe Tourism Authority Chief Executive Officer, Mr Karikoga Kaseke, expressed dismay at the development, saying all ports of entry including airports must conform to international laws such as the Chicago Convention to which Zimbabwe is a signatory.

“All ports of entries have been turned into torture camps and this is unprofessional behaviour that should be stopped. In fact, airports should abide by international laws that Zimbabwe is signatory to,” said Mr Kaseke.

Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Walter Mzembi said his ministry is concerned with the developments, adding that such type of searches appear to be inhuman and will derail economic gains scored by Zimbabwe so far.

“ZIMRA should desist from such kind of searching as it derails our efforts in tourism,” Minister Mzembi said.

Contacted for comment, ZIMRA Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Mr Taungana Ndoro said he could not answer the questions and advised that any questions should be put in writing and will be forwarded to management.

As from the 1st of January this year, ZIMRA introduced new measures at the border posts which include 100% body searches.

With the country set to host the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly next year, economic experts are calling for normalcy to prevail for the benefit of the public, the business community and investors.

Honestly we feel betrayed by the so called ZIMRA Patrol Officers too. Look If the border has checked my goods after entry and some 300KM from that port an oficer again searches and want to match items by declaration forms its a bit absurd. Let me say this remember we cross the border to bring thiongs that we can sell and get money to survive BUT due to your constraining rules we end up sharing our commodities when making declarations at the port. Once we are in Zimbabwe side we return back the goods to the owners. Now the ZIMRA Officers come and want to match those items. Its not the best way to operate. How about those who will be in Zimbabwe side and buy from the various cross borders arriving?? Those goods are already in zimbabwe why do I need a declaration Form? I have only bought the goods in Zimbabwe. There must be better ways of maximizing their operation somewhere somehow!!

It is absurd, Zimra and ZRP have lost the plot.

Zimra...buying a blanket, clothes that you were wearing, or those that you bout for your own use...new shoes. Please Mr Biti and Mr PAsi kindly put your house in order.

This is getting too trivial and petty.get to Revenue streams, motivate companies and individuals to pay tax and to register to pay tax voluntarily without the harsh harsh attitude, you will be surprised how much you can achieve by voluntary effort rather than forcing people.
