Traditional leaders have underscored the need for government to come up with measures to ensure that communities which are going to be severely hit by drought next year are properly cushioned with food aid.
The meteorological department has forecast that the 2012-2013 farming season will be characterised by normal to above normal rainfall in the northern regions.
Some parts of the country will be hit by a severe drought and if government does not come up with measures to cushion these communities a disaster could be looming.
Chiefs have emphasised the need for government to come up with measures to ensure that communities which are going to be hard hit are cushioned and receive grain on time.
Government intervened with the grain loan scheme where farmers were supposed to pay back the grains after harvesting from the 2012-2013 rainfall season.
Apart from the grain loan scheme, government needs to come up with a comprehensive climate change adaptation plan which will help mitigate droughts in some parts of the country.
