Vice President Landa John Nkomo says more resources should be channelled towards livestock production and research as the country has experienced a decline in the national herd.
In a speech read on his behalf by the Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office, Cde Flora Bhuka at the 72nd Annual Congress of the Zimbabwe Farmers Union currently underway in Bulawayo, Vice President Nkomo said the country’s cattle population which stood at over six million in 2000, has declined to five million.
The Vice President also urged the Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development to enable small holder livestock farmers to access pedigree stock to improve the quality of their livestock.
Cde Nkomo also said there is need for the country to utilise irrigation programmes and transform from subsistence to commercial farming.
He encouraged farmers in drought prone areas to grow small grains which are viable.
The congress is running under the theme: “Promoting Livestock and Small Grains Productivity for Sustainable Household Food Security and Incomes”.
