Born on September 29, 1929, Cde Sabina Mugabe was one of the courageous women who took it upon themselves to be actively involved in politics before and after independence.

Cde Sabina’s determination to see the people of Zimbabwe empowered was witnessed in 1977 when she built a sewing school in Chegutu meant to empower the black majority.

A mother and a mentor, Cde Sabina did not only seek to educate her own biological children, but also advocated quality education for all Zimbabwean children.

As a legislator, she worked tirelessly in ensuring the well being of the people of her constituency by creating employment through projects.

A strong supporter and a beneficiary of land reform, Cde Sabina promoted the programme and took her time to educate the people of Zimbabwe on the significance and importance of land.

Cde Sabina will always be remembered for her role in the empowerment of the Zimbabwean people as well as her determination as a mother in shaping her own sons - Leo and Patrick - for political office.

Cde Sabina will be remembered for being an active and vibrant member of the ZANU-PF Women’s League where she served as National Secretary for Production and Labour.

She was also Member of Parliament for Makonde East in 1985 and former legislator for Zvimba South constituency between 1990 and 2008.

Sister to the Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, President Robert Mugabe, Cde Sabina has been declared a national heroine.

She died on the 29th of July 2010 at a city hospital in Harare.

She will be buried at the national shrine on Sunday the 1st of August 2010.
