The announcement by President Emmerson Mnangagwa that government has taken over the rehabilitation of roads in towns and cities from urban councils has started bearing fruit with major road links in Harare now being repaired.

A snap survey in the low and high density suburbs of Harare reveals an interesting scenario whereby most roads which were in a state of dilapidation owing to negligence by city fathers are now being rehabilitated thanks to President Mnangagwa’s intervention.

Major road links like Harare Drive, Adberne in Mbare, and Masimbi in Glen Norah among several others have been repaired, with motorists and commuters commending the new dispensation for taking over the rehabilitation of roads from urban councils.

The Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Dr Joram Gumbo told ZBC News that engineers have been deployed to identify all roads in low density suburbs of Harare which require urgent attention so that government will quickly move in to repair them.

The road network in Harare and other urban areas have outlived their lifespan, and residents and motorists accused the city fathers for sleeping on duty and appealed to President Mnangagwa to institute more intervention measures to bring sanity in the area of service delivery including provision of clean water and health facilities which have been run down by councils over years.
