The National Blood Service Zimbabwe (NBSZ) has intensified blood donation campaigns in the country with the aim of securing adequate stocks.

NBSZ staff, blood donors and members of the uniformed forces held a march in Harare CBD in a bid to raise awareness on the importance of donating blood.

The march comes on the back of the Nyamakate accident which claimed 43 lives and injured more than 30 people on Wednesday.

NBSZ Public Affairs Manager, Ms Ester Masundah appealed to all Zimbabweans to have a culture of donating blood and save lives.

She said during emergencies, blood plays a critical role, hence the need to make sure hospitals have adequate stocks.

A 58 old blood donor, Mr Danny Zinyemba, who has donated blood for more than 60 times, urged all Zimbabweans regardless of age to donate blood.

The World Blood Donor Day is held on the 14th of June every year and ZBC’s Radio Zimbabwe will partner NBSZ and broadcast the celebrations live.

The campaign theme for 2017 is: ‘What Can I do? Give Blood, Give Now and Give Often.’
