Namibian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mrs Balbina Daes Pienaar has saluted the command agriculture programme for transforming the lives of many people in the country.

She described the food security cluster as espoused in the country’s economic blue print ZIM ASSET as a vehicle for increasing food self sufficiency.

Mrs Daes Pienaar said the SADC region looks up to Zimbabwe as a source of food and called for the adoption of modern production technologies to increase agricultural profitability and market competitiveness for agro-products from Zimbabwe.

The Namibian Ambassador was speaking at the 70th edition of the Mashonaland West Agricultural Show in Chinhoyi.

She urged local farmers not to limit themselves to producing the staple food crop maize, but to diversify and venture into production of small grains and animal husbandry.

Mashonaland West Show Society chairman, Mr Godfrey Mavankeni said participation by corporate exhibitors increased this year to 80 from 57 last year.

He added the showcase provided an opportunity for business linkages and connections.

A deputy director in the Office of the Minister of State for Mashonaland West, Mr Douglas Chiwiro said there is every reason to celebrate this year’s show as it came against the backdrop of a bumper maize harvest never witnessed in many years.

The show was held under the theme, “Revitalising the Economy Through Agriculture: Empower, Finance and Produce”.
