The athletics season open competition involving field and track events roared into life in the capital with athletes from Mashonaland Central, Manicaland, Midlands, Mashonaland East, Mashonaland West and Harare Province participating.

Athletics coaches’ took advantage o the season’s opener to assess athletes before the athletics calendar goes into full swing.

National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe director of youth coaching, Brian Nhubu said the coaches are using the season’s opener as preparations to assess the mental strength of the athletes.

The competition which clashed with the back-to-school time had a low turnout though Nhubu is confident the Bulawayo Athletics Board will stage a better season’s opener come 2019.

Bulawayo is set to hold its season’s opener for athletes from Masvingo and the three Matabeleland Provinces on the 14th of this month at White City Stadium.

Meanwhile, the association is in the process of identifying athletes for the youth games.

Despite waiting for the release of African slots, athletes like South African based Donovan Mutariswa, St Georges Simbarashe Makata and Region V tripple jump gold medalist Dorothy Karumbura are set to make it into the team.
