A dam project in Makotore village, Mwenezi district has transformed the area by boosting food and nutrition security and empowering the community to carry out income generating projects.
Villagers under Chief Neshuro have been empowered following construction of Tsvimborume dam in Makotore village which is enabling them to establish a viable nutrition garden.
Pegged in 1995, dam construction was stalled due to lack of funds but the community completed work on the dam and a weir in 2015 with help from the World Food Programme (WFP).
The dam and nutrition garden have brought a remarkable transformation to communities surrounding it since villagers are producing vegetables for food nutrition and generating income from sales.
Mwenezi Development Training Centre programmes manager Ms Promise Makoni says development practitioners, local authorities and government ministries should continue supporting the community with technical support to ensure their project is sustainable in the long term.
More than 592 households with a population of 2 239 and a total of 7 773 livestock are now benefitting from the weir while the nutrition garden has 100 members.
