Mutare’s Urban Renewal Project will be underway soon as the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing is in the drive to provide adequate and safe housing for all.
The Urban Renewal Project which is under command housing will see to the reconstruction of dilapidated flats in Sakubva providing proper housing for occupants.
In an interview with ZBC News, Manicaland Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing director Engineer Tendai Chiwanza said the initiative to come up with the urban renewal project was a result of the struggle citizens are facing while living in dilapidated flats as most of them are ticking time bombs.
“The structures in Sakubva are not meant for families as they were built during the colonial era for bachelors but due to lack of accommodation families ended up using them. So we now want to construct proper structures meant for families. We do not have enough land as the population is continuously growing so we will densify by constructing high rise buildings to accommodate many,” he said.
Engineer Chiwanza also indicated that there were plans to construct cities in residential areas so that citizens do not have to travel to the central business district for services.
The Urban Renewal Project will be done nationwide with the local government ministry partnering with local authorities and investors to provide Zimbabweans with adequate and proper housing.
