Globally local authorities are using geographical information systems (GIS) to easily find, access and view information through the use of maps and mapping technology.

The City of Mutare says it intends to employ the use of a GIS in obtaining geographic data about the city for purposes of city mapping and knowing the number of households the local authority has.

Like many other cities, Mutare has a number of residents that are benefitting from services such as water provision and refuse removal but are not paying owing to a poor database.

Experts said there is need to ensure that the City of Mutare has an accurate database in order to account for all its ratepayers as well as ensuring that all land developments are sanctioned.

The GIS is also set to assist the local authority in rationalising its Gimboki residential area which is yet to have sewerage, water and road networks.
