A Mutare man has been jailed for 8 months failing to pay maintenance for his three minor children since 2016.

Tonderai Zisengwe (40) appeared before Mutare Magistrate, Mr Tendai Mahwe who handed him an 8-month sentence for neglecting the upkeep of his three minor children.

In passing sentence, the presiding magistrate, Mr Mahwe said Zisengwe’s offense was a serious one as he proved to be an irresponsible father who ignored his children’s needs for three years, at the same time ignoring a court order that compelled him to pay $110 every month for his children’s upkeep.

Mr Mahwe further said it was the courts’ duty to ensure that irresponsible parents were encouraged to take care of their children as minors are left to suffer because of the uncaring attitude exhibited by some parents.

Zisengwe was asked to pay the maintenance arrears in the sum of $2 970 immediately or stay in prison for eight months.

Zisengwe argued that he has been unemployed since 2016 and was unable to fend for his children as he was faced with financial constraints.

In response, the court told him that there was no pleasure without responsibility, thus he was supposed to face the consequences of his actions.

Zisengwe was arraigned before the courts after his ex-wife, Florence Mushonga-Chiware made a report that the accused had breached a court order for three years.
