A 27-year-old Mutare man has been slapped with a six month jail term for faking an Eco-cash $1 100 payment confirmation message.

Tatenda Kaitano, who was appearing before a Mutare magistrate, Prisca Manhibi, facing charges of fraud will serve an effective four month jail term after part of his sentence was suspended on condition of good behaviour.

The State managed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Kaitano committed the offence on October 4.

Facts are that on the said date, Kaitano went to a shop and showed interests in purchasing a mobile phone.

It was alleged he showed the shopkeeper a fake Eco-cash confirmation message misrepresenting that he had paid for the $1 100 phone.

The shopkeeper was suspicious as it took long for the message to appear on his phone and when he asked Kaitano to accompany him to an Econet shop to verify the payment, Kaitano confessed that he had showed him a fake message.

Kaitano was then taken to the police before appearing before court.
