The City of Mutare at one time had a strong industrial base which sadly as a result of company closures saw thousands going unemployed and many other firms threatened with collapse.
While the City of Mutare is supposed to be enjoying growth underpinned by its proximity to the port city of Beira as well as value addition particularly of agricultural produce, this is not the case.
At the motor assembly plant, Quest Motor Manufacturing’s capacity utilisation stands at just over two percent while at cooking oil and soap manufacturer, Willowton, policy interventions were cited as critical for survival.
Manicaland Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Cde Monica Mutsvangwa also bemoaned the sorry state of industry in Mutare.
Cde Mutsvangwa said she will leave no stone unturned in search of ways to stimulate firms in Manicaland Province.
What is critical is that government as the biggest spender supports firms such as Quest Motor Manufacturing.
It is evident that products being made in the country compare favourably with those being manufactured globally with the missing link being support and an affordable pricing regime.
