Maja Village in Mudzi district of Mashonaland East has become the first village in the province to attain open defecation free status.
The status is accorded to a community that has all its members using sanitation facilities.
The rural water, sanitation and hygiene project was started in March 2007 and has started bearing fruit in Mashonaland East with one of the pioneer villages having attained open defecation free status which has been welcomed by villagers.
Stakeholders have also hailed the project which has improved the health of the community.
The programme which is being run in four districts of Mashonaland East was implemented by UNICEF, Farm Community Trust in partnership with the Mudzi Rural District Council.
A total of fifty (50) villages from five wards were selected in Mudzi.
