At least 500 prison inmates are malnourished as the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) faces budgetary constraints in supplying rations to prisoners.

Budgetary constraints facing the ZPCS have resulted in 500 inmates experiencing undernourishment.

Receiving a donation of 30 tonnes of sugar from Tongaat Hulett, ZPCS Commissioner General Retired Major General Paradzai Zimondi commended the sugar manufacturer for the timely intervention as the organisation is facing constraints in supplying rations.

Tongaat Hulett managing director Mr Sydney Mutsambiwa said the organisation which sits on the Masvingo prison advisory board has a long standing relationship with the ZPCS and will help whenever possible.

The ZPCS caters for an average 19 000 inmates and requires around $28 million per year as the standard diet is $3 per prisoner although allocations from the fiscus fall far below the required level.
