There were mixed fortunes for Zimbabwe players at the 2nd ITF Futures 18 and under south central circuit 2nd leg singles tournament currently underway at Harare Sports Club.
Top seed Kimberly Bhunu progressed to the next round while Mutare based Batsirai Saurombe exited at the second round stage.
More than 150 players aged 18 and under from all over the world are taking part in the three tournament series.
France based Bhunu recovered from a first set to beat her opponent in three sets and advance to the next round.
Zimbabwe’s 5th seed 18 year-old Saurombe of Mutare’s Mantras Club had a nervy and shaky start and never recovered to lose in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 to Micah Rodrigues also of Zimbabwe.
He is now hoping for better fortunes in the third and final tournament of the series.
Tennis Zimbabwe vice president, Biggie Magarira said hosting a tournament of this magnitude provides local talented players the opportunity to get international exposure and experience.
In other boys third round results Sebastian Nothhaft of Hong Kong beat Piwokuhle Moyo of Zimbabwe 6-0, 6-0, third seed Richard Ngarwi of Zimbabwe recovered 2-6 down in the first set to win 7-6 (5) after a tiebreak and a 7-6 (5) win after another tie break in the third set.
In the girls’ section round 3 Annika Kannan of India beat Vimbai Heidi Moyo 6-1, 6-1.
