The Minister of Sport, Arts and Recreation, Kazembe Kazembe says delivering tangible results should be the primary objective in the transformation of sport in Zimbabwe.

He said this when he today met the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) board for the first time since being appointed sports minister.

“Sport in Zimbabwe will always be judged by the performance of athletes, thus the need to ensure key objectives are met,” said Kazembe.

ZOC President, Admire Masenda outlined the need for a paradigm shift on sport, often being viewed as an afterthought.

He also appraised the sports minister on the various programmes that ZOC runs, pointing to the African Youth Games and the Youth Olympics as the two major events of focus in 2018.

The ZOC President also pointed out the significance of Zimbabwe being readmitted into the Commonwealth, which could serve as a vital cog in the development of Zimbabwean athletes.

Minister Kazembe assured the ZOC board that re-engagement is a vital policy thrust for government.

The welfare of athletes after retirement and the need for infrastructural development of sport facilities were among several other issues discussed at the meeting.
