The Minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development Dr Joseph Made says the country has the capacity to store 4 million tonnes of grain, adding that government is finalising on the refurbishment of Grain Marketing Board silos across the country.
The capacity of GMB silos has been on the spotlight with fears that there will be lack of enough storage facilities when farmers harvest the expected bumper yield.
Dr Made says the national silos have the capacity to hold 700 000 tonnes while other GMB storage facilities can store up to four million tonnes in addition to private silos.
The Minister also revealed resources have already been mobilised for the completion of the silos refurbishment process.
There has been concern that with the amount of grain expected to be harvested this season, the national storage facilities in their current state may cause massive grain loss which government countered through the silos refurbishment programme.
