obert-mpofu1.jpgState enterprises in the mining sector have been challenged to  increase their contributions to the country’s fiscus.

The challenge was made by the Minister of Mines and Mining Development Cde. Obert during the handover of a dividend to the government by the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC).

The challenge by government to mining companies comes at the back of projections in the 2010 national budget that the mining sector will grow by 40% this year.

Minister of Mines and Mining Development Cde. Obert Mpofu said given the fast improving economic climate which has seen the resurgence of the sector there is need for mining companies to increase their contributions to the fiscus by declaring more dividends.

Most of the country state enterprises in the mining sector have not been paying regular dividends to the state in the past decade and recently two of the parastatals the Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (MMCZ) and the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC) reversed the trend by declaring dividends to the state.

Meanwhile government says it is in the process of reviewing the tax framework to ensure that the country fully benefits from its mineral resources.
