nyasha mharakurwa.jpgZimbabwe 2010 sportsperson of the year with a disability, Nyasha Mharakurwa has stormed into the round of 16 after winning his first singles match at the South Africa Open Wheelchair tennis tournament currently underway in Northwest Province, South Africa.

Mharakurwa beat Spaniard, Daniel Caversachi 6-1, 4-6, 6-1to book a place in the round of sixteen where he will face Austria’s World Number 9, Martin Lergner this Tuesday.

Mharakurwa said he struggled in the opening singles match but is hoping to pick up his form as the tournament progresses.

The tennis ace is yet to win the singles event, but is optimistic of achieving that this year, having come close twice in 2008 and 2009, when he lost in the semi-finals.
