The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has today appeared before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Health and Child Care to give oral evidence on its operations and supply of medicines in the country.

The MCAZ is an autonomous authority which is run from the statutory fees collected through services and it does not receive support from the fiscus.

The Director General of MCAZ told the committee that their mandate is to ensure medicines and allied substances for humans and animals are safe, effective and of good quality.

The MCAZ is centralised in Harare where there is a growing problem with the influx of illicit undeclared drugs.

The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee Health and Child Care noted with concern the abuse of bronclear by youths.

However, the authority says it is law enforcement agents who are responsible for curbing the smuggling of drugs.
