The media has been commended for its critical role in the agriculture sector through disseminating vital information such as weather forecasts and management of plant and animal diseases for the benefit of farmers.
These sentiments came out during the 2019 Agriculture Media Awards held in the capital last night (Friday).
Guest of honour at the event, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Senator Monica Mutsvangwa said the media can bring to the attention of government areas of concern in the sector.
The Deputy Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Water, Climate and Rural Resettlement, Cde Vangelis Haritatos said journalists facilitate agriculture information collection and dissemination to farmers, thereby encouraging agriculture practices to help rebuild the economy.
Zimbabwe Agricultural Society Chief Executive Officer, Dr Anxious Masuka said the media is primed to report more objectively and do an in depth analysis of various sectors, including articulating the role of agriculture.
Among the journalists who dominated the 13-category 2019 Agriculture Media Awards was ZBC reporter Theophilus Chuma.
The categories included best cotton reporter, best small grain reporter and best livestock reporter, among others.
