The Zimbabwe Republic Police has described threats by the MDC-T leaders and the party’s supporters to engage in violence as wishful thinking, saying law enforcement agents will easily quell any such illegal moves.
The past two weeks have seen some perpetrators of violence threatening to cause chaos in Zimbabwe, with some minor disturbances being reported in Mbare, Budiriro, Glenview, Glen Norah and Chitungwiza, among other residential areas.
ZRP Officer Commanding Harare Province, Senior Assistant Commissioner Clement Munoriyarwa however said violence will never be tolerated in Zimbabwe, adding that police are geared up in case some misguided elements try what they have seen in other countries.
“This is wishful thinking. The situation in Egypt will never be tolerated anywhere in Zimbabwe. People have a right to originate opinion, but as police we are not going to allow that.
“We want to assure the nation that we are fully prepared for such violent activities and our officers are already on the ground to ensure peace and tranquility prevails in the country,†he said.
On Wednesday MDC-T supporters had planned to gather at Harare’s Town House where they were supposed to be addressed by their leader, Mr. Morgan Tsvangirai, after which they planned to start violent demonstrations against the Government.
However, the moves were thwarted by alert law enforcement agents.
