More than 2000 hectares of land will be put under the wheat crop in Matabeleland South province after 31 farmers expressed interest to participate in the Command Wheat Programme.
In an interview with the ZBC News, Matabeleland South provincial Agritex officer Mr Masawuso Mawocha said the success of government’s Command Agriculture programme has seen more farmers in the region offering land for Command Wheat.
While 1 648 hectares was planted under Command Maize, more than 2000 hectares will be dedicated to wheat farming.
The province has to date received 2000 tonnes of double D fertiliser, 517 tonnes of lime, 78 tonnes of seed and 36 000 litres of diesel.
ARDA Antelope Estate manager Alec Chinyai says the timeous availability of inputs has been credited to the success of the Command Agriculture programme.
The irrigation facility will put 750 hectares under Command Wheat up from 480 put under the summer crop.
