A team from the Ministry of Health and Child Care is currently carrying out investigations at Masvingo General Hospital following the suspension of senior management over allegations of corruption and theft.
Following allegations of corruption against senior management at Masvingo General Hospital, who have since been suspended, a team from the Ministry of Health and Child Care has descended on the medical institution to carry out investigations.
The Chief Director for Preventive Services in The Ministry of Health and Child Care, Dr Gibson Mhlanga told ZBC News that the investigations were instituted after a written submission to the ministry alleging that there is a syndicate stealing medication, among other accusations.
“We are doing an investigation following a written submission alleging that there was corruption taking place at Masvingo hospital involving a syndicate that is stealing medication, abusing government resources at the institution and flouting tender regulations,” said Dr Mhlanga.
Dr Mhlanga said the investigations will be concluded within 14 days.
“We are currently deep in the investigations and we will conclude and make recommendations,” he said.
In April this year, the hospital`s Clinical Director Dr Julius Chirengwa told government officials who visited the institution during the commissioning of a refurbished theatre ward that the hospital was struggling to purchase drugs due to cash constraints.
Apart from shortage of drugs, Masvingo General Hospital is also faced with infrastructure challenges with the hospital’s rehabilitation unit presently being housed in a veranda.
