Masvingo city continues to battle with its housing backlog which is being worsened by the rapid increase in rural to urban migration.

Masvingo City Council Housing Director Mr Levison Nzvura says the city needs land to build more houses if they are to reduce the 15 000-housing backlog.

“Land is needed to build houses as the population continues to increase in Masvingo city. The numbers are not stagnant they increase annually which is a major cause of the housing backlog,” said Mr Nzvura.

Director Nzvura added that introducing flats and high-rise buildings in future must be considered given the scarcity of land.

Amongst other challenges that are associated with an increase in population in urban areas, water shortages continue to affect most cities in the country.
