The distribution of Presidential free cotton inputs is progressing well in Mashonaland West with over 25 000 hectares expected to be put under the white gold in the province this season.
Most farmers registered under the 2018-2019 Presidential Free Cotton Inputs Scheme in Mashonaland West are now geared to plant their white gold after receiving seed, fertilisers and tillage on time.
About 94 tonnes of cotton seed which can cover 25 000 hectares is being distributed to farmers.
“We are targeting 25 000 farmers, who will plant a hectares each, meaning about 25 000 hectares will be planted this season under my business unit,” said Brian Bangura, Cottco manager Chinhoyi.
Production of cotton which has nosedived over the past years is on a recovery path with over 140 000 tonnes recorded this season against a national requirement of 350 000 tonnes.
Dubbed the ‘white gold’, the cash crop is expected to rake in over US$80 million in foreign currency up from US$11 million achieved last year.
