Youths from Mashonaland Central in the Under 23 age group have benefited from a 3-week athletics camp aimed at nurturing their talent.

The athletics camp convened at Chipadze High School in Bindura attracted youths from all districts in the province with the exception of Mbire and Muzarabani who did not send any representatives.

Organiser of the camp Taflow Athletics Club President Tafadzwa Chitiyo said the initiative is aimed at nurturing talented athletes from grassroots level in the Under 13, Under 18 and Under 23 categories.

“We take children from all over the province and put them in camp. It is running for the 2nd year now,” said Chitiyo.

The camp was also preparing the athletes for the National Youth Games which have since been postponed following a typhoid outbreak in Gweru, the host city.

Multiple award-winning athlete Artwell Mandaza, who was the 1st African athlete to run 100 meters under 10 seconds in 1970, was on hand to provide his expertise to the young athletes.

The young athletes expressed optimism their performance will improve due to the expert training they have been receiving in camp.
