Farmers in Marondera have welcomed the command chicken programme which they say has capacitated them to produce chicks.

The farmers who received their chickens and feed at Grasslands Research Station as part of the programme’s pilot project thanked the government for reviving their projects saying lack of capital to kick start their projects has been the major stumbling block, despite having the facilities.

Mashonaland East provincial livestock officer Mr John Taderera said the programme is a welcome development as it will empower the farmers in the area.

A total of 12 farmers benefitted from the project in Marondera district which received 20 000 day old chicks.

Four districts namely Goromonzi, Mrewa, Seke and Marondera have so far benefitted from the project in Mashonaland East with each district having received 20 000 chicks.

Sakunda Holdings who are the off takers of the chickens funded the projects while Kudu Creeks Abattoir in Goromonzi are the official abattoirs of the programme.
